OSM announces a new workflow viewer for
job suites in COSbatch

December 2002

OSM has released a job suite workflow viewer for use with v2.3 of the enterprise job scheduler, COSbatch. It allows users to visualize the flow of job execution activity through suites as it happens.

The COSbatch Workflow Viewer is an addition to the existing interface modules – the graphical user interfaces for Windows® and the X Window System, as well as the character terminal interface. The Viewer is now available for all major platforms supported by OSM.

OSM builds adaptive systems management products for enterprises with a mixed network of Unix, Linux and Windows servers. COSbatch is used for production automation and job scheduling and a real time, visual display of the status of jobs is a natural addition to the existing capabilities.

As the trend towards increasingly powerful IT infrastructures continues – in enterprises of all sizes – so the number of background jobs increases and job suites become more complex. The number of interdependencies between jobs grows faster still, and monitoring the progress of large suites which can contain jobs that run on several systems dispersed around the network can quickly become a formidable task.

The new module for COSbatch allows users to visualize the execution flow through a suite of processes. Preconditions for interdependent jobs within the suite can be checked and colors indicate the status of jobs, all of which are displayed in real time. Execution errors can be quickly identified, and the Viewer's zooming features allow users to drill down into troublesome areas for more detailed information.

In addition to providing monitoring capabilities, the module also allows background processes to be controlled and maintained from the same view, providing that the user has been assigned the access rights to do so.

The new COSbatch Workflow Viewer allows users to:

  • display any selection of job suites that are scheduled or in execution, without regard to the physical location of the processors on which the jobs are specified to run

  • see the execution flow through a suite in real time, with different colors indicating the changing status of jobs – i.e. running, successfully completed, in error etc.

  • zoom in and out on any section of the suite, with more detailed information being displayed as the number of visible jobs decreases

  • control both individual suites and jobs

  • monitor the attributes of suites and jobs

  • maintain the attributes of suites and jobs

This first release of the COSbatch Workflow Viewer has been tested to ensure compatibility with the leading versions of UNIX, Linux and Windows, specifically:

  • Sun Solaris

  • IBM AIX

  • Hewlett-Packard HP-UX and Tru64

  • Linux V2.2 and V2.4

  • Windows NT4 and Windows 2000
