OSM announces a new browser-based
user interface for COSbatch

October 2002

OSM has released a web browser based user interface for its enterprise job scheduler, COSbatch.

The new web browser interface complements the existing alternatives – the user interfaces for Windows® and the X Window System, and the character terminal interface – so organizations may select the right option for every circumstance. The Web User Interface is now available for all major platforms supported by OSM.

OSM builds adaptive systems management products for enterprises with a distributed Unix and/or Linux server infrastructure. COSbatch is used for production automation and job scheduling and a browser-based user interface is a natural addition to the existing alternatives.

The COSMOS User Interface for Windows has until now been the preferred means by which the functionality of COSbatch has been accessible over the enterprise network. Browser based technology extends this accessibility without regard to distance.

Despite supporting widespread accessibility, the COSbatch web UI embodies the same strong access controls as do the other interface options. COSbatch administrators may therefore allow a dispersed user community to access the job scheduling service, safe in the knowledge that remote users pose no greater risk to the service than do those on the local network.

One real benefit of this security is that administrators may be liberal in granting users access to COSbatch. In this way, users have every opportunity of tracking the status of their own batch jobs and make many fewer calls to the help desk.

The web UI allows users to:

  • Submit batch jobs

  • Monitor and control queues

  • Monitor and control scheduled jobs

  • Monitor suites and the jobs contained in them

Despite the use of the web browser, all these operations are controlled by the normal COSbatch security mechanisms as described above. Administrators are familiar with these as robust, fine grained and easy to manage.

This first release of the COSbatch Web User Interface has been tested to ensure compatibility with several of the most common web server and browser components, specifically:

  • Apache Web Server
  • Sun™ ONE Web Server (formerly iPlanet Web Server)
  • Microsoft® Internet Explorer 5.x web browser
  • Netscape® 6 web browser
