Press Release OSM releases V2.4 of its COSbatch job scheduling and IT operations management software
ASCOT, UK and SEATTLE, WA, USA. October 21st, 2004: UK and USA based software house, Open Systems Management Ltd. ("OSM") today announced the release of V2.4 of its COSbatch job scheduling and IT operations management software for mid to large scale end user organizations. The software release further assists users of UNIX, Linux and Microsoft Windows® operating systems to manage their background processes, and to provide greater control of their IT operations environment. The financial benefits of automated batch job scheduling are well understood and proven, and OSM ranks among the world leaders in this sphere, with twelve years experience of selling and developing such software. The new release of COSbatch adds significant functionality to the previous version, and illustrates OSM's belief that systems management and security management needs to converge. Neil Chaney, President and CEO of OSM said, "OSM believes that mid to large scale enterprises want systems and IT operations management software that also tightens security. In this way, improved security, auditing and legislative compliance can be achieved in parallel with the traditional benefits of systems management software - a quick Return on Investment ("RoI"), implementation of best practice, improved service levels and accountability. Such improvements in security are made less difficult to justify monetarily, and those members of staff working in systems and operations management are rendered accountable." COSbatch V2.4, whose repository is hosted on a UNIX or Linux system, can support interdependent batch processes across a heterogeneous infrastructure of UNIX, Linux and Microsoft Windows. By automating the background processes, user organizations can be assured that encapsulated standards and best practice are being carried out, and that all activity is logged and audited. This obviously lends itself to improved audit and compliance, but this is significantly extended through the embedded COSduty-SSA module which extends COSbatch V2.4 to manage interactive tasks. The new COSduty-SSA module provides a library of commands which includes a set of reusable GUI tools, and any command-line driven operation can be encapsulated into a GUI routine by embedding those commands. The resultant encapsulated routines can then be delegated through the COSduty-SSA delegation engine to a pre-nominated individual, or group of individuals, to carry out on a scheduled or ad hoc basis. Any background process initiated by the interactive action is, of course, scheduled using COSbatch. All privileged use routines e.g. those requiring the ‘root’ account on UNIX or Linux systems, or the ‘oracle’ account on ORACLE, can be encapsulated in the GUI and the resultant routine delegated to someone, without that someone gaining privileged access themselves. The need for privileged access, a major concern for companies seeking compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley, Basel II, HIPAA and the European directives is significantly reduced. When full privileged access is required, COSduty-SSA can be used to control and limit the command set allowed, and provide full audit trails of all key-strokes executed. IT Operations interactive tasks can be carried out using the same intuitive user interface as the scheduling environment, with a resultant economic benefit from both automation and delegation. The result is a fully audited, controlled IT operations environment, at the cost of a job scheduler. Chaney went on to say, "Improved security and auditing is required by most end user organizations to meet the demands of recent legislation. COSbatch V2.4, and its embedded COSduty-SSA module, provide for significant extra functionality to help facilitate compliance, which is paid for by the quick return on investment seen from its automation and delegation capabilities." COSbatch V2.4 also incorporates an improved and more intuitive Graphical User Interface, enhanced domain availability of job definitions and additional Failover capabilities.
